Counsel @ Leading Fintech Company

New York
$200,000 - $300,000 + equity

Overview

Whistler Partners is working with a fast-growing fintech company in New York looking to add a Counsel to its legal team.

This is a high-ownership role for someone who can manage disputes, regulatory inquiries, and investigations in a fast-moving environment where legal judgment matters. The right person will work closely with senior legal and business stakeholders, outside counsel, and teams across the company to assess risk, keep matters moving, and make sure potential issues are handled before they become larger problems. This is not a traditional law firm-style litigation role. You will be expected to take ownership, develop a point of view, and help drive strategy rather than simply support someone else’s.

Why This Role?

This is the kind of litigation and regulatory role where judgment has real business impact.

The company operates in a fast-moving and highly regulated environment, which means disputes, government inquiries, and novel legal questions can move quickly and require clear decisions. You will help manage active and threatened litigation, coordinate responses to regulatory inquiries, work directly with outside counsel, and build the systems that give the legal team a clear view of risk across the business. The best fit is someone who thinks independently, writes clearly, and is comfortable making practical calls without a perfectly written playbook. Someone who can look at a difficult situation, assess the facts, form a view, and help move the matter forward. For a lawyer who wants more responsibility and more visibility, this is an opportunity to work close to the business and take meaningful ownership over sophisticated legal matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage active and threatened litigation matters from initial intake through resolution.
  • Assess litigation and regulatory risk and make clear recommendations on strategy and next steps.
  • Draft and coordinate litigation holds, preservation notices, and related processes.
  • Work directly with outside counsel while maintaining internal ownership of matters and strategy.
  • Review outside counsel work product, scope, and spend critically and identify opportunities to handle work internally.
  • Support responses to regulatory and government inquiries and coordinate internal document collection efforts.
  • Maintain clear matter tracking so the legal team and leadership have an accurate view of active and potential disputes.
  • Build and improve litigation operations processes, including matter tracking, legal holds, and document management.
  • Draft correspondence, internal analyses, and other materials related to disputes, investigations, and regulatory matters.
  • Partner with business teams to identify legal risk early and help address issues before they escalate.
  • Help the team stay ahead of competing priorities in a fast-changing environment.

About You

  • J.D. and active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 2–4 years of relevant legal experience at a law firm.
  • Strong litigation, investigations, regulatory, or related disputes experience.
  • Experience handling regulatory or government inquiries.
  • Strong legal writing, research, analytical judgment, and communication skills.
  • Ability to assess risk and translate legal issues into practical recommendations.
  • Comfortable managing multiple matters with meaningful independence.
  • Strong judgment and ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience working with outside counsel and evaluating scope, strategy, and work product preferred.
  • Interest in building practical systems and processes around litigation and investigations.
  • Prior experience with fintech, digital assets/blockchain, financial services, or another regulated industry preferred.
  • Direct exposure to CFTC, SEC, state attorney general, or other regulatory investigations or enforcement matters is a plus.
  • Comfortable taking initiative and solving problems without waiting for detailed instructions.

TL;DR

Fast-growing New York fintech company hiring a Counsel with 2–4 years of experience. Strong fit for someone who can manage disputes, regulatory inquiries, outside counsel, and litigation workflows while exercising real judgment and ownership. Best for someone proactive, commercially minded, and comfortable taking responsibility in a fast-moving legal environment.
