Nadeen Shatara may have the best poker face we’ve ever seen. But is it a poker face if you actually have a great hand? With five years of experience working in recruiting at Fenwick & West and Gunderson Dettmer in San Francisco and New York, Nadeen has a direct line to every hiring partner in the startup space on either coast.
A first-generation American raised in San Francisco, Nadeen built her career around one thing: people. After studying psychology at Marymount (she'll be the first to admit she's always been the person friends call in a crisis), she quickly discovered that the most rewarding part of any role was helping others navigate important decisions and opportunities.
Ironically, recruiting wasn't part of the plan. With no intention of working in the legal industry, Nadeen asked her brothers - a tax partner and a software engineer - if they knew of anyone hiring. A conversation led to an interview at Fenwick, and what started as a curiosity quickly became a career. During her three and a half years at Fenwick, she helped the firm rapidly expand its footprint and, in 2019, moved across the country to help grow the firm's New York office.
She later joined Gunderson's New York office during another period of significant growth, managing the east coast offices and further developing her expertise in lateral hiring, growth strategy, and relationship-building. Nearly a decade into legal recruiting, Nadeen has worked across some of the industry's most dynamic markets, partnering with attorneys at every stage of their careers and helping firms navigate complex talent needs.
Nadeen appreciates that attorneys (according to her, litigators especially) tend to be direct and practical, qualities she shares. Outside of work, she's usually planning her next trip, enjoying a gin martini (straight up), or playing rec volleyball. After four years in New York, she reluctantly concedes that New York pizza lives up to the hype and now that she's back in California, she misses it more than she'd like to admit.
What energizes her most is building long-term relationships with candidates and serving as a trusted advisor throughout their careers, a philosophy that aligns naturally with Whistler's candidate-first approach.
