Job Overview
As a core member of the leadership team, the Chief Legal & Compliance Officer works directly with the CEO and has the ultimate responsibility of instilling a strict culture of compliance throughout the organization, and providing broader counsel to our leadership team and board with respect to legal and regulatory matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the subject matter expert on all Legal, contracting, and compliance topics
- Design the contracting playbook, independently operate it day-to-day and drive continuous improvement; this includes drafting templates, reviewing redlines, seeking internal input, negotiating with opposing parties and performing document execution/retention
- Provide practical counsel to internal stakeholders and generate reasonable solutions that meet the needs of the business and adhere to legal and compliance standards
- Anticipate and mitigate potential legal and compliance problems within the company and develop strategies to protect our interests and manage risk; support the development of internal policies and procedures to help address these concerns
- Handle administration and resolution of legal topics and questions beyond contracting, such as employment, privacy, HIPAA, GDPR, IP, fundraising, corporate, regulatory, and other matters
- Manage relationships with outside counsel and identify areas where external expertise is necessary
- Advise senior leadership on Legal matters; perform research, provide useful data, and draft opinions to help guide decision making
About You
- At least 8 years of experience as an attorney, preferably with a mix of significant
law firm and in-house experience at a biopharmaceutical company and/or a
healthcare services organization
- At least 4-5 years of experience in health law or compliance, for example: laws
and regulations around engaging physicians and patients, privacy laws, payor
requirements, healthcare regulation
- Significant experience in defining and establishing the compliance targets a
company must meet, drafting and setting up compliance procedures,
monitoring/auditing the organization’s performance with respect to those
procedures, and recommending corrective actions if and when needed
- Experience with policies and procedures for capturing, storing, accessing, and
transiting sensitive data
- Comprehensive understanding of relevant federal and state laws and
regulations, including HIPAA and GDPR
- Desire and ability to maintain a current working knowledge of actual, proposed,
or pending legislation, regulations, and policies that affect the business
- Experience in broader corporate law issues (e.g., reviewing key legal agreements
such as employment and contractor contracts, provider and partnership
agreements, vendor contracts) and in working with external counsel as needed
- JD from a U.S. Law school and a member of a US state bar in good standing, with
the ability to register as in-house counsel in New York
